In 2004, we first began building our community at a location in West Bloomfield. We have since expanded to include locations in Birmingham, Royal Oak, Grosse Pointe, and Southfield.
Yoga Shelter’s main purpose is to develop together a space in which yoga is affordable, accessible, and welcoming to all. The introductory membership we offer gives new students a chance to learn more about what we do with minimal financial risk. Classes are open to any experience level, and packages are designed to suit many different needs. The Detroit yoga teacher training program we offer gives trainees a chance to expand their knowledge.

Meet Our Team!
With over 30 years of experience in the health and fitness industry, Michelle King is able to bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to Yoga Shelter. She wears many hats in her work with us, as a manager, business owner, health professional, group instructor, yoga instructor, and master instructor trainer. When Michelle entered the fitness world in 1984 at Central Michigan University, she began a journey she is continuing to this day.
Michelle earned a BA degree in Applied Arts, with a major in Health Fitness Programming and Promotion and a minor in Foods and Nutrition. During that time, she had an internship in the corporate wellness division at S.C. Johnson and Sons. She started her career with Fitness USA as an instructor/sales associate after her graduation in 1985. Shortly after, she distinguished herself as the number 2 sales person in the company.
She went on to serve as the Assistant Fitness Director at the Beverly Hills Racquet and Health Club where she also was a Group Fitness Instructor. Then in 1986 she moved to become a health educator for the Washtenaw County Public Health Department for 13 years, where she was promoted 3 times. During this time, she still taught group fitness and yoga at various locations.
After leaving the health department in 1999, Michelle worked for over 15 years as a fitness and yoga instructor at Life Time Fitness. In 2005, she opened Fit Diva, Inc. which she successfully grew over the next 5 years.
Michelle is ecstatic to be helping lead Yoga Shelter as it grows into a world-class Midwest yoga company.
After being introduced a few years ago to the world of yoga, Brandi has been able to learn from some amazing yogis and yoginis. She has a great respect for the extraordinary impact that yoga can have on people’s lives, and herself has been impacted by the practice. Brandi loves teaching, and feels immensely privileged to get to be a part of so many other people’s journeys through yoga. She is deeply grateful to Yoga Shelter and to the community for the opportunity to continue sharing her practice.
Marty has been teaching yoga for over 15 years. He has taught thousands of classes and is currently leading teacher trainings. He works to bring classical yoga philosophies to his everyday work, and has the skill to make even complex ideas accessible to new students.
In addition to being an ERYT200 and RYT500 yoga teacher, Marty is also a certified YogaMedics therapist. He frequently attends workshops and has gone through teaching courses with Yoga Shelter, UpDog Yoga and YogaMedics.
Marty prides himself on challenging his students to leave their comfort zones and continue to grow and explore their skills and their worlds, helping them to unlock their potential.
Janelle has two passions in her life: numbers, and yoga. It is fortunate for Yoga Shelter, then, that she has joined us as our CFO! She gained over 10 years of experience accounting for companies such as U.S. Cellular and McDonalds after earning her BBA in Accounting from WMU in 2004.
While living in Chicago, she discovered yoga. In 2011, Janelle joined a teacher training program with Core Power, after which she did a small bit of teaching. Soon, however, she decided that accounting was still her main calling. When the opportunity to manage the accounts at Yoga Shelter emerged in 2014, she knew it was the position of a lifetime. A year later she took on the role of CFO, and is now more dedicated than ever to helping Yoga Shelter continue to succeed.
A recent graduate from Wayne State University with an English degree, Emily has a passion for creativity in all of its many forms. She interned with a small digital marketing firm and brings that knowledge with her to Yoga Shelter. She began as a student in 2014 and was blown away by the enthusiasm and passion of the entire team. She intends one day to go through the teacher training course, and views that as a way to broaden her perspective on life as well as bring the many benefits of yoga to new people.
